How to use this page

Use the internal dimensions of the raised bed and the depth you plan to fill. If an existing layer occupies part of the bed, calculate only the depth still needed.

1. Measure each bed

Use length and width for rectangles or diameter for circles. Measure depth separately; do not confuse inches of depth with feet of length.

2. Add an allowance

The extra percentage is your choice, not a recommendation for every material. Compaction, settlement, moisture and uneven ground can change the amount needed.

3. Compare purchase options

Enter the volume printed on a bag and local prices if you know them. Bags round up to a whole bag; bulk orders need the supplier’s rounding and delivery rules.

Good to know

What does one cubic yard cover?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. At 3 inches deep, that is 108 square feet before any extra allowance. Divide 27 by depth in feet to find coverage.

Does a bag count include waste?

The count includes only the extra percentage you enter. It rounds the adjusted volume up to the next whole bag. Keep the allowance at zero if you do not want extra material.

Can volume tell me the weight?

Only if you supply a suitable bulk density for that specific material and condition. Moisture and compaction change density. Ask the supplier before planning vehicle loads.

Keep going.
