Useful estimates you can inspect.
YardQuant helps you turn measured spaces into material shopping plans. It is an independent collection of free calculators operated from Ontario, Canada.
What the site does
Our focus is the gap between a geometric volume and a real purchase: multiple areas, whole bags, bulk minimums, order increments and delivery charges. The explanations and worked examples help you check the arithmetic before relying on it. The site does not sell landscaping material or provide site-specific professional design advice.
Formulas and conversions
For a rectangular area, volume = length × width × new-layer depth. For a circle, volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. Imperial inputs use feet for plan dimensions and inches for depth, so depth is divided by 12. Metric inputs use metres and centimetres, so depth is divided by 100.
- 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.
- 1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres.
- 1 foot = 0.3048 metre exactly, so 1 cubic metre is approximately 35.3146667215 cubic feet.
- Adjusted volume = summed base volume × (1 + entered allowance ÷ 100).
- Bag count = adjusted volume ÷ bag volume, rounded up to a whole bag.
How order rounding works
For a positive bulk need, we first take the larger of that need and the entered minimum order. If a positive selling increment is provided, we round that quantity up to a whole increment. A zero-volume project stays zero even if the supplier has a minimum.
Bulk cost = rounded order × unit price + delivery. Bag cost = whole-bag count × price per bag. Both bulk price and delivery must be supplied to show a bulk total; blank is not the same as zero. The currency selector labels the result and does not convert exchange rates.
When density is entered, estimated bulk weight = rounded order × supplied density. Density has no default. Pound and kilogram outputs must not be treated as an assessment of vehicle or structure capacity.
Checks and editorial approach
The calculator’s arithmetic is checked with worked examples, unit-equivalence tests, zero-volume cases, mixed-area totals, bag rounding and supplier minimum/increment combinations. Material pages separate original arithmetic examples from linked horticultural guidance. These checks do not amount to a site inspection or professional certification.
Content was revised on 7 October 2026 to give each material a distinct explanation and to show supplier rounding explicitly. We do not claim named horticultural or engineering credentials. Local product specifications and current supplier quotes take precedence over illustrative examples.
Sources and corrections
Plant-care context links to University of Minnesota Extension and Oregon State University Extension where relevant. Those organizations do not endorse YardQuant. Hypothetical prices are marked as examples; no live price feed or automated local quote is used.
If you find an arithmetic or content problem, use the contact form. Include the page, the non-sensitive inputs and the expected result. Do not send personal documents or payment details.
Privacy and funding
Calculations run in your browser. Tool inputs are not sent to an application database, an AI service or Analytics. Optional Analytics measures visits only after your consent. Advertising is currently disabled; if enabled after approval, ads will be labelled and kept away from the calculator’s action buttons and printed plans. Read the Privacy Policy for provider and consent details.
For the scope of the service, see the Terms and Disclaimer. A calculator result is a starting point for verification, not a guarantee of the quantity needed at your site.
